Who knew that Barnes & Noble owned a publisher? I certainly didn’t, but it makes a lot of sense. If you own the sales channel, you might as well start creating your own product too. That’s why Barnes & Noble acquired New York City’s Sterling Publishing a few years back. It’s allowed them to squeeze more profit out of their dominance in retail book sales. It seems to me that the scope of the types of books that Sterling publishes is expanding, but their main focuses are in puzzles, photograpy, crafts, gardening, and do-it-yourself. If you really want to take a close look at what types of books Sterling Publishing puts out, you can see a list of their imprints with descriptions on the Sterling Publishing About page.

A Sterling Start

Sterling Publishing’s mission is “to publish high-quality books that educate, entertain, and enrich the lives of [their] readers.” I’m not sure that differs much from any other publisher, yet they say that they stand out because they “have the reach of the major publishers yet the passion & creativity of an independent press.” You’ll have to take a closer look at Sterling and the books that they publish to get a feel for whether they’ll be the right place for you. If you do think that you’ll be a good fit, then you should head over to Sterling’s Internships page. They don’t have specific internship listings, but they do say that they offer exciting paid internships in the fall, summer, and spring. A little more research shows that they’re looking for interns in Craft Editorial, Art, and Photography, although I’m sure that there are other options available too. If you want to intern with them in New York City or in Asheville, NC, send a resume and cover letter to hr@sterlingpublishing.com

Not too long ago, the only unmanned aerial vehicles were planes flown by women (yuck, yuck, yuck). Now we live in a world where planes can fly themselves. Sometimes I like to consider myself high-tech for running a business on the web, then I think about the companies that design, develop, and produce autonomous aircraft and realize that I’m not high-tech at all. Bingen, Washington’s Insitu is one of those companies. They build UAVs that have amazing reconnaissance, communications relay, and geophysical surveying capabilities. Most of their work has been with the military so far, but Insitu is operating in an infant industry with an amazing potential for growth. In fact, from 2004-2007 Insitu’s revenue grew by 1,702.4% to $50 million annually. This performance put them on Inc. Magazine’s List of the 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2006 and 2007. Insitu CEO Steve Sliwa was also named CEO of the Year for 2007 by Seattle Business Monthly. Insitu is clearly comfortable with taking off.

Unmanned Internships

Beyond the cool factor of what Insitu does, their corporate culture is also impressive. They describe themselves as “a lifestyle company with innovative and creative employees who pour as much into their personal lives as they do into their work at the office.” Insitu has a “business comfortable” dress code and is dog friendly. There is also a heavy emphasis on “Living in the Gorge” – meaning the Columbia River gorge, which offers extraordinary outdoor opportunities. You can go kite surfing, mountain climbing, steelhead fishing, or snowboarding with just a short drive. There is even a list of nearby activities on the Insitu website. The way Insitu treats its people has to be part of their amazing success.

So, what about internships? Right now Insitu is recruiting for Fall 2009 Interns and Summer 2010 Interns. Their internship offerings for both fall and summer range all over the place. They have opportunities in: Engineering (Avionics, Software, Product Development and Propulsion), Marketing, Human Resources, Production, Supply Chain, Flight Operations, Technical Writing, Accounting/Finance, Legal, Facilities, Flight Training, Material Management, Quality Control, IT, and Business Development. All internships with Insitu are paid, and you can apply for them online. Get yourself off of autopilot, and apply for an internship with Insitu now.

“Go Local” is a pretty common buzz phrase these days. You’re supposed to eat local, shop local, and even study local. To some people this is a new idea, but businesses like Travers Collins & Company have been focusing on working locally for a long time (in their case since 1995). They saw a void in the Buffalo, NY area when it came to advertising, public relations, interactive and investor relations, so they filled it. Judging from the number of times “Buffalo” shows up on their client list, that seems to have been a smart move. They’re now “one of Buffalo-Niagara’s largest locally owned and operated integrated marketing communications firms,” as they have more than 40 employees.

Buffalocal

It’s always hard to differentiate between marketing communications firms, as they all kind of look alike. The easiest way to get a quick read on whether one of these companies is right for you is to take a look at their portfolio. It also can’t hurt that the “Buffalo-based agency won 24 of 63 Excalibur awards, which were presented by the Buffalo/Niagara chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.” If you like what you see, you’ll want to check out Travers Collins’ Jobs and Internships page. Their internship listings barely have any detail, but they do list points of contact in Public Relations, Advertising Account Management, Investor Relations, and Creative (there’s also a contact for Interactive on their Contact page). There’s no word on whether these positions are paid or not, and according to Travers Collins’ Twitter account, the deadline to apply for Fall internships is July 15th. Get moving!

The world of media is getting confusing. You’ve got marketing, PR, advertising, communications, social media, and plenty of other areas that are escaping me right now, and they’re all converging. The lines are getting blurred between each of these practices, and that means that media strategies need to be tighter. That’s what True Media is all about. They area Columbia, MO based, independent, full-service media strategy and communications company, and they operate with a “media neutral belief combined with a holistic integration of social media, PR, interactive and traditional advertising.” It may sound like a lot of jargon, but what it really comes down to is delivering measurable results for clients, and that’s what True Media does.

True Media Internships

What it all comes down to is that media is about reaching your target audience. No matter what method you use, you want to get your message to the right people. If you’re trying to hire interns, this is a great place to do that. If you’re trying to reach retiring baby boomers, you might want to look elsewhere. True Media does the research to understand where to find their clients’ target audiences, and then they make media buying decisions based on those insights. Then they’ll analyze the effectiveness of the campaign and tweak it for continuous improvement. This is the future of business. If you want to be a part of it, check out True Media’s Internships page. They’re looking for both Media Assistant Interns and Interactive Media Assistant Interns at their office in Columbia, MO as well as in Calgary, Alberta. I’d assume that their Summer positions are filled, but they have a July 31st application deadline for Fall internships. There is no mention of whether the internships are paid, and they also don’t say how you can apply, so I guess you’ll have to do a little research to figure out to land one of these internships.

I was lucky enough to graduate from college without having had to take out any student loans, but even if I had needed to take out a loan, at least it would have been before the “credit crunch.” These days it’s a lot harder for students to finance their educations than it was just a couple of years ago. Credit in general is extremely tight right now, and beyond that, lenders are being very picky about whom they lend to. For students with no credit history, getting a loan can be a big pain in the butt. People Capital is a New York City based startup that is aiming to change that through what they call a “peer-to-peer lending platform.” They’ve developed a Human Capital Score “to assess the creditworthiness of those just starting their credit histories,” and they’re now building out a network of borrowers and lenders to bring the idea to life. It’s kind of like Kiva for education, but with a for-profit incentive keeping things efficient.

Add Your Human Capital to People Capital

When People Capital’s idea catches on, it has the potential to completely change the lending industry—not just the student loan industry. We used to trust banks to make smart financial decisions, but those days are over. Now we can micro-manage our lending and borrowing through peer-to-peer lending. Borrowers can get lower rates based on information that goes beyond the traditional credit score, and lenders can make a profit while financing the educations of promising students. It’s hard to say whether people are ready for this kind of a business model yet, but if they are, People Capital is going to be growing at insane rate pretty soon (if they aren’t already).

If People Capital sounds like the kind of place that you want to start your career, then you should check out their internship listings on Startuply. Right now they’re looking for unpaid interns in Research, Marketing/Product Management, and Consumer Finance. You can apply for these positions online right now, and keep your eyes peeled for more new internships as peer-to-peer education lending becomes all the rage in the world of microfinance.

Having spent 7 years at a private prep school, I know the educational value that such institutions offer. I also know that private schools aren’t accessible to everyone (but neither are great public schools). That’s why I think that it’s pretty cool that a New York City based non-profit organization called A Better Chance is achieving its mission “to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society” by enrolling students of color in Member Schools (which are apparently both public and private). Since 1963 when “23 headmasters of selective independent schools made a mutual commitment to change the profiles and compositions of their student bodies,” A Better Chance has improved the educational outcomes of more than 12,000 alumni.

A Better Chance for You

A Better Chance just keeps getting bigger and bigger. They now have “a record 544 new Scholars in a growing national network of more than 300 Member Schools.” That’s more students than my school had K-12! A Better Chance’s website doesn’t go into a ton of detail on the specifics of their program (at least as far as I can tell), but I’m sure that some deeper research will give you a full view of how the program works. As for internships, they have two opportunities available right now. They’re looking for a paid Development Intern (Idealist) in New York City and an unpaid Program Intern somewhere in the Southwest (I think it’s in Los Angeles). The application instructions vary, so check out the individual postings to get the scoop.

Last year we took a look at internships with Phantom Fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July, but this year it’s a weekend, and that means non-profit internships. I decided to play things a little safer, so my first thought was The National Council on Fireworks Safety, but they don’t appear to have any jobs or internships. That led me to the Itasca, IL based National Safety Council, which is also concerned with fireworks safety. Fireworks safety is just one small piece of what the National Safety Council does though, as their mission is to “educate and influence people to prevent accidental injury and death.” And that’s just want we want to do on July 4th.

Bring Safety to Your Internship Search

First and foremost, I want you to focus on having a safe holiday weekend, but after you’ve accomplished that, you might as well combine your quest for safety with your internship search. The National Safety Council focuses on safety in transportation, at home, and in the workplace, so they’re much broader in scope than other safety organizations. The NSC works through 39 state and regional chapters that “identify safety needs of particular interest to their areas and deliver community-based programs and services, trainings, conferences, workshops and consultations, and serve as a local voice for safety advocacy.” If that sounds like something that you want to be a part of, then you should check out the National Safety Council’s Jobs page. Right now, they don’t have anything internships posted; however, we did find an outdated posting for a paid Communications/PR Internship. You can also check these Google search results for more info on NSC internships.

Since I’m going to have a non-profit for you tomorrow, let’s start celebrating the Fourth of July today. Now, I know that you probably have fireworks, the beach, hot dogs, and hamburgers on your mind, but let’s take a minute to appreciate the Declaration of Independence. It’s the best “I Quit” letter in the history of the world. It’s like that letter that you wrote to your parents when you were 14 and decided that you were moving out, except it isn’t completely nonsensical. The Declaration of Independence has a lot to do with why this country is so great, so I hope that you’ll take a minute to give it a read today. And where do you go if you want to read the Declaration of Independence? The National Archives, of course! You can see the original document in all its glory, or you can check out a more readable version. If you’re not familiar with what the National Archives is, basically they “are the nation’s record keeper.” They preserve and keep forever 1%-3% of our government’s documents for both legal and historical reasons.

Declare Your Independence with an Internship

One Day, One Internship has its own archives, but it’s nothing compared to what the National Archives has (duh!). The National Archives serves many constituencies, as there are all kinds of uses for historical documents. These include: the General Public, Genealogists/Family Historians, Veterans and their Families, Educators and Students, Researchers, Records Managers, Preservation and Archives Professionals, Information Security Specialists, Federal Employees, Members of Congress, Press/Journalists, and more I’m sure. You could spend hours learning about the National Archives and what they have preserved, so I’m going to leave that research up to you.

What I do have for you is an inside look at what kind of internships they have available. You can start learning about what it’s like to work at the National Archives by visiting their Careers page, and from there you can check out their Internships page. From here they separate their internships into three categories: Washington, DC area, Regional Archives, and Presidential Libraries. Each has a ton of different types of opportunities associated with it. Some examples are Archival Internships, Business & Administrative Internships, Editorial Internships, Exhibitions and Educational Outreach Internships, Grants Management & Research Internships, Legislative Internships. There’s a ton of information, so you’ll probably have to spend an hour or two just researching the different opportunities. You can learn how to apply for these internships here, and you can also check out the National Archives’ Intern Experiences page to get a look at what former interns are saying about their internships.

I know just what you’re thinking right now! “I don’t get advertised to enough.” (If you’re really thinking that, why don’t you check out our job search prep course that will teach you how to get an internship faster?) Ok, so that’s not really what you’re thinking, but it’s what the guys at Boston based Amp Idea are thinking. They think that online advertising has developed some amazing ideas, while outdoor advertising (and other similar mediums) have lost their effectiveness. They want to bridge that gap through things like Taxi Interactive Screens, Hotel Tourist GPS, Tabletop Restaurants, and Limo and Bus interactive devices. We’ve already checked out a company called Captivate Network that is doing this kind of thing in elevators, so it seems as though there is a lot of room for growth in “digital advertising in the out of home space for business owners.”

Amp Idea is very early stage startup, but they’re already deploying interactive taxi screens in Boston, and they plan to expand to New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. in the very near future. It’s a really cool idea, and if they can gain market share quickly, they’re going to have a very serious business on their hands in a couple of years. According to the company’s LinkedIn Profile the company has 5 employees, and they’re looking to add more in the form of interns. Right now they have internships in Marketing, Graphic Design, and Quality Assurance posted on Startuply. All of the internships are unpaid, but they seem pretty flexible—you could probably still apply for the summer, or you could talk to them about a Fall opportunity.

I was a chubby kid. Even though I enjoyed sports, exercise just wasn’t something that I was interested in. If I had been a part of something like New York City’s The Fit Pit, maybe it wouldn’t have taken me until my Senior year in high school to get into decent shape. The Fit Pit “is an award-winning youth health fitness company which runs ‘Superhero Academy,’ an innovative, incentive-based fitness program for children, utilizing a superhero ranking system.” Personal trainers for kids may sound a little ridiculous, but if we can beat childhood obesity, we’ll be well on our way to solving many of the health issues that currently plague adults. Now, there have been gyms for kids before, but what makes The Fit Pit stand out (besides the superhero theme) is that they offer “a strong educational backdrop” that teaches kids the basics about fitness and nutrition.

Dive into an Internship with the Fit Pit

Now, I know that I said that I was done with Summer internships before I took a two week vacation, but I keep coming across opportunities, so I’m going to share them with you. I found out about The Fit Pit from Robin Herman, the Director of The Fit Pit. She told me that one of her interns is moving back home, and she’s looking for a few college students to get started as soon as possible. She’s looking for interns in Business Development and Physical Therapy/Sciences; however, I’m sure that she’d be happy to hear you if you bring something else valuable to the table. The internships are unpaid, and you can reach out to Robin at shherman1@gmail.com.

I love statistics—especially when applied to sports—so it should be no big surprise that some of my favorite blogs include The Wage of Wins Journal, Sabernomics, and FanGraphs. Surprisingly, the statistical knowledge found on the best blogs these days is often far ahead of what you will find in the front offices of many major sports teams. The reason for the recent advancement in statistical sports knowledge of laypeople has a lot to do with how easy the Internet and computers have made it to collect and analyze in-depth data. A big reason that sports data is available is because of Northbrook, IL based STATS. Their story is pretty cool. They were founded in 1981 and “began as a grass roots operation tracking baseball in a unique, esoteric fashion.” Now, they’re “the world’s leading sports information, content and statistical analysis company.” I guess that numbers worked out for them.

Do Your STATS Match Up?

If you’re a sports stats geek like me, you’re probably already dying for an internship with STATS. As you look more closely at the company, I think that your excitement will grow. They couldn’t be a bigger deal when it comes to sports statistics—they cover an insane number of sports, and their clients include the NFL, the NBA, CBS Sports, Google, Yahoo!, and quite a few other impressive names. So what about internships at STATS? There aren’t any—at least as far as I can tell. You’d think that they’d have a thriving internship program, but nothing shows up online. Don’t worry, though. Their Jobs page shows a number of positions that might be suitable alternatives to internships (and they’re paid!). These positions include Data Collector (Golf, Football, Baseball, or Soccer) and STATS Reporter. Check out STATS’ Jobs page for how to apply, and don’t be afraid to inquire about an internship too. Maybe they have a program that they don’t publicize much.

This is a guest post by Heather R. Huhman. Heather is the media relations manager at a national health care professional association and entry-level careers columnist for Examiner.com.

You don’t have to be in Washington, DC to be part of the political scene. Lesic & Camper Communications is doing just fine with their two locations in Ohio—Columbus and Cleveland. The agency’s specialties are media relations, public affairs and strategic counsel, and its staff has “decades of experience in journalism, public policy, government, political and issues management, and public opinion development.” While many of Lesic & Camper’s clients are Ohio-centric, they do have a few big names on their roster, such as Accenture and Nationwide.

Between the two offices, the staff at Lesic & Camper is extremely small—nine staff members and two “associates” (partner organizations). Lesic & Camper is what I would call “top heavy” in that they have very few junior-level staff members. However, this gives you an opportunity to really learn from the pros.

Come Camp Out in Cleveland

As I’ve stated before, there are still summer internships to be had! Lesic & Camper is currently seeking an unpaid Public Relations Intern in its Cleveland office. They have a few expectations from their interns, including a willingness to ask questions, an eagerness to learn new things, a strong work ethic and the ability to have fun. Now, a few things you can expect in return—how to build media lists, make follow-up calls, monitor news clips, craft media pitches, plan and organize events, and write news releases, media advisories and talking points.

Interested? Send a cover letter and résumé to account executive Meagan Meyer at mmeyer@lesiccamper.com.

At some point during your internship search, you’ve probably read at least one article about what to wear to a job interview . If you’ve already had an interview or two, you were probably stressed out about the decision: blue shirt or white shirt? or some other mundane detail like that. For a lot of people, what to wear to an interview is a much bigger issue. That’s where Dress for Success comes in. They are a New York City based non-profit that aims to “promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” Every year Dress for Success and their affiliates across the world help more than 40,000 women become better prepared to land a job.

Get Dressed for Success

Here’s how Dress for Success works. Women have to be referred to Dress for Success by government or non-profit organizations like homeless shelters, immigration services, job training programs, educational institutions and domestic violence shelters, and the woman must already have an interview scheduled to receive clothing. From there:

On her initial visit a woman receives a suit appropriate for the industry in which she is interviewing and, if available, accessories. After a woman finds a job she returns to Dress for Success for additional clothing that can be mixed and matched to make several outfits, providing her with the foundation for a professional wardrobe.

While we may be best known for providing suits to women, it is our employment retention programs that are the cornerstone of the organization. Soon after Dress for Success was founded we came to recognize that finding work is only one step in a woman’s journey towards economic independence; remaining employed and building a rewarding career are essential if a woman is to become self-sufficient.

You know how stressful the job search process can be, so I’m sure you can appreciate how awesome the Dress for Success’ work is. If you’d like to become a part of their team, you should check out their Jobs and Internships page or their Idealist page. Right now they have two unpaid Program Development Internships in New York City on their page and an Affiliate Relations Internship posted on Idealist. The application instructions vary, so check out the job descriptions for all of the details. Also, be sure to check out individual Dress for Success affiliates for more internship opportunities.

There are countless celebrities who support charitable causes. There are many who throw their full support behind a single organization; however, few celebs are as personally invested in their charitable work as Michael J. Fox is. Why is he so invested? Because his life is on the line. He is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, “a degenerative disease of the brain that often impairs motor skills, speech, and other functions.” If you’ve seen Michael J. Fox on tv lately, you’ve seen what Parkinson’s does to the human body. It’s a tragic disease that will hopefully be cured due to the work of the New York City based Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. As an accomplished actor and someone who is living with Parkinson’s, Michael J. Fox is the perfect person to lead the fight against the disease.

Outfox Parkinson’s

The MJFF’s mission is pretty simple; they are “dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease within the decade through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson’s today.” The Fox Foundation has already funded $142 million in Parkinson’s research, but they’re clearly not satisfied stopping there. To accomplish that, they need a top notch staff, so it’s no big surprise the they’re hiring interns. If you head over to the MJFF’s Internships page you’ll see what’s available. Right now the Fox Foundation is looking for a PD Online Research Intern, and they also have an Accounting Internship posted on Idealist. You can apply by for either of these positions by sending a cover letter and resume to foxjob@michaeljfox.org. Both internships appear to be unpaid, and there also seems to be the possibility of applying for an unlisted internship.

I don’t know if you noticed, but internships are kind of hard to find now. Summer opportunities are mostly filled, and recruiting for Fall internships hasn’t quite begun yet. That means that I’ll be taking the next two weeks off from posting, and then I’ll start back up, hopefully, with lots of Fall opportunities to tell you about. I chose today’s company strictly become of their name: The Barbarian Group. I had a great history teacher in high school who loved talking about barbarians. The only problem was that the word often came out of his mouth with a bunch of spit. I chose to sit directly to his left, which was out of the zone of expectoration, where I could sit safely and be amused by the flying saliva as it came dangerously close to landing on my classmates’ textbooks. That’s why I like the word barbarian. You’ll like The Barbarian Group, because they’re a totally sweet “digital services and creation company” based in Boston, NYC, and San Francisco. Their employees also collectively own 3,909 pairs of shoes. You can add to that.

Barbaric Internships

I love The Barbarian Group’s website, which makes sense because that’s what they do. You can learn a ton about the company from browsing, so I’m going to let you do that and have some fun (it’s a pretty entertaining site). Right now The Barbarian Group is looking for a Summer Web Development Intern at their San Francisco office. They need someone “who has experience with front-end development and knowledge of Ruby on Rails” and “design skills are a plus.” The internship is paid, and you can apply by sending your resume and portfolio to jobs@barbariangroup.com.

Since you’re looking for an internship, it’s probably a safe assumption that you are not familiar with “expensing” things. Hopefully you will be one day (soon). Many companies (especially consulting firms) allow their employees to pay for travel, lodging, and food, and then submit receipts to the company to get reimbursed. It can be pretty sweet if you’re getting $30 a night to spend on dinner, while racking up credit card points and frequent flier miles at no expense to you, but the downside is that submitting expense reports to get reimbursed is time consuming and quite annoying. Concur, a Redmond, WA based company that I learned about in Sramana Mitra’s Entrepreneur Journeys, solves this problem through their “on-demand Employee Spend Management business services.” Put simply, they have a suite of solutions that enables companies to automate the expensing process.

Do You Concur?

Expense management is a complicated process that you’re probably not going to understand fully any time soon, but all you need to understand about Concur is that they make the process much simpler. Or as Concur puts it, their “unified approach to managing employee spend delivers a 360 degree view into all employee expenses, helping companies globally enforce policies and monitor vendor compliance, while delivering unprecedented control and valuable insight.”

The cool thing about how Concur started is that they fixed a problem that was bothering them. Concur’s current CEO, Steve Singh, was complaining to his business partner about how he had to file $150,000 in receipts a week before a project closed to make sure that he’d get reimbursed. From this complaint came Concur—a solution. Concur does have a College Recruiting Page, but it seems a bit out of date. Your best bet to get the scoop on internships at Concur is to check out their main Careers page and then take a look at their specific job openings. Right now there’s only one internship opening for an Accounting Intern (there’s no mention of whether it’s paid or not). You can apply online directly from the job descriptions, so get at it!

A lot of people think inventing is easy. You see those guys like Billy Mays screaming on tv, and you think to yourself, “I could have thought of that.” Believe it or not, even those stupid infomercial products aren’t easy to come up with, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the world of invention. Inventing a new product is a long, arduous process that requires a ton of resources. Invention Machine is a Boston based software developer that “drives sustainable innovation by enabling global organizations to consistently generate breakthrough ideas that accelerate product development.” It’s hard for a non-inventor to understand how software can help the inventing process, but judging from the number of large corporations that are using Invention Machine’s software, there’s something there.

Become a Part of the Machine

Since Invention Machine has a corporate video that goes into more detail about what they do, I’m going to give you a little break from reading.

If you head over to Invention Machine’s Internships page, you’ll see that they have three internship opportunities available right now. They’re in Customer Marketing, Demand Generation, and Market Strategy. They have downloadable Word documents on the Internships page with a lot more detail about each of the positions. There’s no mention of whether the positions are paid, but they are full-time, which often means paid. These are Summer positions, so you should apply as soon as possible by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@invention-machine.com.

More and more often, I’m hearing from people whom I haven’t heard from in a long time. The e-mail usually goes something like this: “I was just looking around online for summer interns, came across your site and then realized it was you!” A few weeks ago, the guy who e-mailed me was friend from high school whom I hadn’t seen in probably 8 years (that makes me sound old). He’s living in New York City and is part of a very early stage startup called LiveIntent that needs interns. They’re focused on “helping advertisers to unlock Twitter as a channel for advertising and customer acquisition,” which sounds like a pretty smart thing to be doing these days. I don’t have much more on what the company is all about, because they really are that new.

Intent to Intern

Since David (my friend from LiveIntent) sent me a full job description that you’re not going to find anywhere else, here’s the deal on these Summer internships:

Employer: LiveIntent, Inc
Job Title: Social Media Outreach Intern

About LiveIntent:
LiveIntent is a young startup looking for intelligent, creative people with strong writing skills and lots of ambition. We are a small technology company helping advertisers to unlock Twitter as a channel for advertising and customer acquisition.

Job Description:
We are looking to hire 4 part-time employees/interns to help us manage a growing network of Twitter accounts. The employees will start part-time with an evaluation after one month and the potential of full-time employment and quick advancement. Each employee will be responsible for managing, growing, and creating content for a handful of branded Twitter accounts. We will provide oversight, but minimal guidance–employees are encouraged to think and act creatively and develop unique editorial voices and methods of their own. Employees will be evaluated according to pre-defined metrics; performance will be rewarded. LiveIntent is a young company experiencing explosive growth. Don’t miss this great opportunity to get in at the ground floor of an exciting new venture!

Compensation:
Each employee will be paid $100 a week for the first month. At the end of one month, compensation will be re-evaluated according to performance.

Qualifications:
- Enthusiasm and hard-work
- Team player who can work with a small group of dedicated people. Ambitious but humble.
- Strong writing skills (creative writing preferred)
- Familiarity with Twitter (if you don’t know the difference between an @ and a #, you’re probably not right for the job)
- Ability to do more with less

Contact: David Temple – davidjtemple@gmail.com. Please include a writing sample.

David and I talked for a while on what he should expect from interns, so I think you can expect LiveIntent to offer a pretty great internship experience.

This is a guest post by Heather R. Huhman. Heather is the media relations manager at a national health care professional association and entry-level careers columnist for Examiner.com.

Did you always want to be in the broadcast business? You might want to think about making your start at zcomm, a Bethesda, MD based broadcast public relations firm. What kind of services do they offer? “Radio news releases and video news releases, TV and radio tours, radio and TV PSAs, radio promotions, client-sponsored syndicated radio, satellite radio features, corporate videos in English and Spanish, webcasts, online video and podcasts,” according to the zcomm Web site. I just love seeing small agencies with big-name client lists, and I guarantee there will be a number of zcomm’s clients that you’ll recognize—Hershey’s, American Express, Honda, and Oreos, just to name a few. And like more and more boutique firms today, zcomm was founded by a woman—former ABC Network news correspondent Risë Birnbaum.

Without U There Is No Buzz

If you thought there were no internships left for the summer, you were definitely wrong! zcomm is currently seeking its next summer intern. Candidates must be media-savvy, good communicators, detail-oriented and energetic. Another requirement? “You must be willing to have fun.” Interested? Send a cover letter and résumé to jobs@zpr.com. Also, I recommending reading zcomm’s blog, The Buzz, before you apply. There’s no word on whether the internships are paid or not, so you’ll have to figure that one out on your own.

If there’s one criticism that I often hear about the non-profit world, it’s that they’re plagued by inefficiency. It’s certainly not true across the board, but taking the profit motives out of an organization can certainly create efficiency issues. Additionally, things like organizational structure, egos, and political agendas can disrupt for-profits and non-profits alike. Root Cause is a Cambridge, MA based non-profit strategy consulting service that “envisions a world in which the public, private, and nonprofit sectors work together to invest and re-invest in the most efficient, effective, and sustainable solutions to social problems.” In other words, they want to find the absolute best way to solve the world’s social problems, and then work with social innovators and social impact investors to make things happen.

The Root to Success

Beyond consulting, Root Cause has 5 other initiatives: Knowledge Sharing, Social Impact Research, InnerCity Entrepreneurs, Social Innovation Forum, and Public Innovators. Each of these initiatives is focused on achieving Root Cause’s values:

Focus above all else on the social problem being addressed, regardless of organizational structure (government, for-profit, nonprofit), ego, or political agenda.

Take a rigorous, thoughtful, and creative approach to work that integrates a broad range of perspectives.

Strive to integrate practice, applied research, and public policy.

Take an entrepreneurial, goal-oriented approach to work, with a commitment to integrity, diversity in all forms, and learning by listening, acting, and on-going self improvement.

Collaborate to support new and existing systems, institutions, and infrastructures in order to provide all types of organizations with access to the information, capital, and tools they need to develop enduring solutions to social problems.

It’s a refreshing approach that sounds like it has the potential to truly change the way non-profit work is done. If you agree, you’ll probably want to check out Root Cause’s Internships page as well as their internship postings on Idealist. The internship currently posted on their Internships page has passed the application deadline, but there’s a new posting on Idealist for a Public Innovators Intern. The application deadline is June 8th at 5 PM Eastern Time, so send them a cover letter and resume fast! The application instructions are a bit complex, so be sure to check the full description out so that you do it right. By the way, the internship is unpaid.

Most scientific literature isn’t what I’d call an easy read, so I wouldn’t be surprised if most of you aren’t beating down the doors to get your hands on the newest research papers. Unless you are a big consumer of research literature, then you probably don’t care much about the openness of scientific and medical publishing, but you should. Open sharing of information can significantly promote innovation, and who can argue against wanting more advances in science and medicine? The Public Library of Science is all about open sharing, as they are a San Francisco, CA based “nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world’s scientific and medical literature a public resource.” They were founded in 2000, and since then they’ve been pushing for scientific and medical journals that “are immediately available online, with no charges for access and no restrictions on subsequent redistribution or use.”

Open Up Your Internship Search

The Public Library of Science has three main goals that are hard to argue against:

Open the doors to the world’s library of scientific knowledge by giving any scientist, physician, patient, or student – anywhere in the world – unlimited access to the latest scientific research.

Facilitate research, informed medical practice, and education by making it possible to freely search the full text of every published article to locate specific ideas, methods, experimental results, and observations.

Enable scientists, librarians, publishers, and entrepreneurs to develop innovative ways to explore and use the world’s treasury of scientific ideas and discoveries.

If you love science and think the open source movement is one of the coolest recent social movements, then an internship at the Public Library of Science would be a perfect fit for you. You can check out all of their available opportunities on their Jobs page; however, there’s only one internship available right now. They’re looking for a paid MarCom Intern who is ” extremely online savvy, eager to learn, enjoys doing background research, writing and be able to work independently.” You can apply for a job at the Public Library of Science by sending a resume and cover letter to jobs@plos.org with the job title as the subject line. The internship is 6 months long, and the deadline to apply is June 12th.

I’ve done it. I’ve found the most ridiculous looking corporate website on the web. It has an animated moving background and multiple bouncing balloon/blimp logos that make it look like it’s straight out of the Imagination Land episode of South Park. It may be a little hokey, but it works for Niles, IL (right outside of Chicago) based The Bradford Group because they’re in the collectibles industry. Their customers aren’t concerned with flash and edginess, they’re all about sentimentality. When you’ve been doing direct marketing of collector plates, music boxes, and all kinds of commemorative items for 36 years, you probably know your audience. So, even though The Bradford Group’s web design leaves me laughing out loud, I’m not going to sell them short based on my taste as a non-collector. (And if you totally disagree with me and love the design, you can make it your computer’s background.)

Take a Balloon Ride

The Bradford Group has a wide variety of brands that fill different niches in the collectibles market. They have The Bradford Exchange, which is all about “limited-edition collector plates”, and there’s also Hawthorne Village, which focuses on “finely crafted collectible villages, electric trains, figurines and accessories.” There are also 9 more brands that market items like sports collectibles, ornaments, and diecast cars and trucks. It’s a business that I know nearly nothing about, but it sounds like it has a lot in common with MBI Inc., whose jobs we featured on One Day, One Job. Beyond having similar businesses, they also both seem to have a huge interest in recruiting young talent. The Bradford Group’s website is plastered with links promoting their jobs, including a special section for College Recruiting. They seem to do a good amount of on-campus recruiting for positions like Direct Marketing Associate and Product Development Associate. I’d imagine they also recruit for internships; however, The Bradford Group’s job listings show a ton of internship opportunities that are still available. These include internships in Catalog Development and Analysis, Marketing, Advertising/Copywriting, Product Development, and Web Design. There’s no mention of whether the positions are paid or not, but I’d lean towards guessing that they are. Also, don’t forget to take an online tour of The Bradford Group’s headquarters, it looks pretty neat.

Summer internships are quickly disappearing, but I’m going to see how much longer I can find some for those of you stragglers who don’t have an internship. If you don’t act soon, you’re going to know all about “country living” because your parents are going to send you off to work on a farm. Now, I don’t know about working on a farm, but I do know about country living because I interned at Orvis, a company whose tagline is “distinctive country living.” With that said, I’ve never picked up the magazine Country Living—probably because their idea of country living is a little different than mine. They focus on areas like decorating, antiques, crafts, and recipes. All good stuff, but it sure isn’t fly fishing. Country Living is a Hearst magazine, and they clearly have their niche figured out. They’re focused mostly on women who are into getting away to a slower style of life, and their editorial and advertising certainly reflects that.

Country Living in the City

Now, the idea of interning at a magazine called Country Living in New York City is kind of weird, but I guess that’s where you have to be if you want to run a successful magazine. There isn’t a whole lot more information about Country Living available, but I do know that they had some internship posted pretty recently on Ed2010. There’s no guarantee that they’re still available, but Country Living was looking for a Photo/Art Intern and an Editorial Intern, both of which are unpaid internships. The applications instructions vary for each position, so check out the original postings to get all of the details.

When I was at Cornell, working on group projects was the bane of my existence—especially when I didn’t get to choose the members of my group. It always seemed that I got stuck with a slacker or two, and there was always someone who just wanted to do the whole project by himself/herself (ok, sometimes that was me). Besides getting stuck with crappy partners, the logistics of organizing meetings, keeping edits to a document straight, and communicating with people who don’t check their e-mail drove me crazy. I guess I wasn’t the only one who didn’t enjoy the group project experience at Cornell, because Dana Lampert, a fellow alum, founded Wiggio, a company and web application that “makes it easy to work in groups.” They’re based out of Cambridge, MA, and they’ve moved well beyond focusing on just college students. Wiggio can help sports teams, non-profit organizations, small businesses, Greek organizations, and pretty much anyone who works with other people. They’ve already broken 100,000 users, and they seem to be growing at an awesome pace, which is why now is the time to think about working for them.

WIG Out!

I love when companies have simple videos that explain exactly what they do. Wiggio has done a nice job, so check out the video below to get the scoop.

Got it. Wiggio’s business model is currently based on selling targeted advertising within the site à la Facebook. I’m not sure if that will work out well, but there’s certainly potential. They seem intent on remaining a free service, but they always have the option of building some premium features for users who are willing to pay. How about internships at Wiggio? They’re a small company with only 3 employees, and they don’t even have a Jobs or Internships page on their site, but they do use Startuply. Right now they have postings for 2 Summer internships. One is in PR/Marketing, and the other is in Web Development. You can apply online, and even if you don’t want to intern for them, give Wiggio a try for the next time you’re working on a group project. Also, the Marketing internship is definitely unpaid, while it doesn’t say on the posting for the Web Development internship.

This is a guest post by George Tarakhovski.

In my experience, consulting has always been one of the top career choices for graduates at my alma mater (Duke). Although the work frequently involves countless hours of engineering multilayered pie charts and histograms in Excel, there are lots of things to like about the profession – great pay, stimulating assignments and lots of client interaction.

For a consulting firm that represents over $8 trillion in assets, kasina’s claim to fame is its expertise in introducing “revolutionary business ideas” to the asset management and insurance industries. kasina, which is based in New York City, is all about practical innovation through unique, trend-defying solutions that keep companies from going stale and losing profitability. Despite sporting an impressive client list, kasina does more than just help corporations stay in business. The team preaches community involvement and is actively involved in non-profit initiatives, including its own youth foundation. To maintain its “culture of learning,” kasina has its team members partake in a book club and post interesting and relevant entries on their blog. Overall, the team culture is fun, communal and non-intimidating. That’s pretty impressive (and unexpected) for a firm that pioneered solutions in hybrid wholesaling, profit-based compensation systems, and behavior-based segmentation.

Ready, Steady, Consult!

So, kasina seems like a pretty cool place full of smart, interesting and well-balanced individuals. Now, how about an internship? Good news! kasina has an opening for a Superstar Intern. Although the job description is lacking in detail, the recurring theme is that you must be someone who is “obsessed with excellence” and “is ready to think differently and make an immediate impact.” While energy and leadership skills are natural prerequisites, the ideal candidate must also be pursuing a degree from a top-tier college, demonstrate an interest in finance, and be fully proficient in Microsoft Office. Successful interns frequently transition into successful employees, so go brush up on your case studies and get your creative juices flowing. Internships at consulting firms are usually paid, and ou can apply for an internship at kasina by sending a cover letter and resume to careers@kasina.com.

This is a guest post by Heather R. Huhman. Heather is the media relations manager at a national health care professional association and entry-level careers columnist for Examiner.com.

Bite Communications touts a “fearless and boundless” approach to B2B and B2C communications. They have seven offices worldwide—three of which are in the U.S., including Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco. “Public relations” and “media relations” used to be synonymous, but no longer at Bite Communications. They recognize different clients have different challenges that require different approaches. Starting your career at a progressive agency is the best way to go—you’ll end up a more rounded professional and thus be more marketable.

As a full-service agency, Bite Communications offers everything from strategic counsel to new media programs to influencer relations—and everything in between. Some client names you might recognize include Sun Microsystems and Vonage. Joining the Bite Communications team would mean joining 150 other brightest minds in the industry. According to their People section, they only hire “the best.” With an average age of 29 years old, the agency is not adverse to a young staff.

Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Biter?

Currently, Bite Communications has two public relations internship positions open—one in New York City and one in San Francisco. Both internships are paid, so they’re seeking candidates with strong writing skills, exceptional organizational abilities, an interest in the technology industry, and a basic understanding of news and social media. Interested? Apply online through the links above. To get a better feel for the people with whom you would be working, read some of their biographies.

For most of the internships that we feature here, safety isn’t much of an issue. You may be concerned about internship security given the current economic conditions, but not many of the internships that we cover will put you in harms way—at least as long as you don’t tip back too far in your desk chair. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of dangerous jobs out there, and many of them are in the construction industry. It’s doubtful that the business of building things will ever be completely safe as long as humans are doing it, but CPWR is doing its best to improve safety in the construction industry. Their acronym used to stand for The Center to Protect Workers’ Rights, but now it seems that their full name is The Center for Construction Research and Training. They are a Silver Spring, Maryland based non-profit organization (despite their .com web address) that was created by the AFL-CIO in 1990, and they’ve become “an international leader in applied research, training, and service to the construction industry.”

Intern Safely

CPWR’s mission is pretty simple, they have a “common vision of a world in which workers acting collectively, their union representatives, employers, government, users of construction services, academia, and the public work together to prevent occupational fatalities, injuries, and illnesses and continuously improve working conditions throughout the construction industry.” They focus on working with all stakeholders to create win-win situations through research, since there’s still a lot that we can learn about how to make construction safer. If safety research sounds like something that you could dig into, you’re in luck. CPWR has a job/internship for you. They have the same position listed as both on Idealist, and it’s for a paid Research Assistant. It requires a background in “computer science, statistics, economics, mathematics, public health, or other quantitative social sciences,” and you can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to sdong@cpwr.com.

We all know it; studying abroad can be a total joke. I know plenty of kids who partied in a different country for a semester and managed to get college credit for it. Fortunately, there are plenty of study abroad programs that focus more on the “study” than the “abroad.” One of those is The School for Field Studies. Now, you may be skeptical when you see their list of locations sounds more like your top 5 vacation destinations (Costa Rica, Turks & Caicos, Kenya, Mexico, and Australia), but look at all of their student accomplishments. The School for Field Studies is “the nation’s oldest and largest environmental study abroad program,” and it combines “hands-on environmental studies with scientific research to develop sustainable solutions to critical environmental problems.”

Intern in the Field

While some students are drinking their way across Spain, The School for Field Studies’ students are getting works like Wood density predicts plant damage and vegetative recovery rates caused by cyclone disturbance in tropical rainforest tree species in North Queensland, Australia or Efficacy of a starch-iodide swab technique to detect the illegal use of bleach in a Spiny Lobster published. Those topics may seem way out of left field to you, but I’ll bet that you’ll be happy they did that research when you’re on vacation and order for lobster for dinner. Or would you rather eat a lobster that was poisoned with bleach? Exactly. The School for Field Studies sounds like a really cool institution, which is why you might want to consider an internship with them. If you’re attracted to their cool locations, you’re in luck. They continuously accept applications for post-graduate internships at their Center for Rainforest Studies – Australia, Center for Sustainable Development Studies – Costa Rica, Center for Wildlife Management Studies – Kenya, Center for Coastal Studies – Mexico, and Center for Marine Resource Studies – Turks & Caicos, B.W.I. Additionally, SFS has summer opportunities at their Salem, MA headquarters for a Marketing Intern and a Prospect Research Intern. How you should apply depends on the internship, so check out the specific descriptions.

A couple weeks ago one of my parents’ friends from college contacted me out of the blue because she came across this site while she was searching for a place to find some interns. She first wanted to get in touch with my parents, but she also wanted me to share some information on some internships with her company, Susan Grant Lewin Associates. They’re a New York City based PR firm with a focus on art, architecture, and design clients. Their list of clients is extremely impressive, and if you want to get a better feel for the kind of work that they do, scroll to the bottom of that page and check out their case studies.

Art, Architecture, and Internships

If you’ve fallen in love with the world of art, architecture, and design, but you don’t quite have the artistic skills to pursue a career on the creative side of those fields, you might just be well suited to a career helping the creative folks get noticed. That’s what Susan Grant Lewin Associates is all about, and they’re looking for some interns to help them this summer. Intern duties will include research, maintaining clippings and digital image files, and assisting account executives. It’s 20 hours per week with a stipend for transportation and lunch (so it’s partially paid). “Being organized and resourceful” will help you thrive at Susan Grant Lewin Associates, and so will skills in PhotoShop, Filemaker Pro, and Cision. You can apply by e-mailing a cover letter, resume, and relevant writing samples to Joan Goldberg at joan@susangrantlewin.com. This is a One Day, One Internship exclusive, so show her how awesome our readers are!

I’ve already written posts about internships at Activision (Guitar Hero) and jobs at Harmonix (Rock Band) and Tapulous (Tap Tap Revenge), but can you ever really get enough of the music playing video game genre? Of course not! That’s why we’re looking at JamLegend today. How are they different from the other game makers that I just mentioned? First, JamLegend is free. Second, it offers more songs. Third, you can use your computer keyboard as a guitar. Fourth and most importantly, it’s social! You can play your friends, you can play the world, and you can even enter tournaments to win prizes. JamLegend isn’t just the name of the game, it’s also the name of the company, a small startup based out of San Francisco.

These Internships Are Your Jam

If you’re a music loving video game junkie who is fascinated by the social web, then you really couldn’t find a better fit than JamLegend. Beyond that, it’s a good career choice. The video game industry continues to thrive through the recession, and social gaming appears to be the next big thing. That’s why you need to check out Internships with JamLegend. You won’t find any specific postings on their Jobs page, but that’s ok because I love their philosophy. They say, “Our belief is that we should hire gifted people even before we need them, so send us an e-mail (jobs@jamlegend.com) and tell us why you are interesting.” That’s about it. Awesome. They don’t explicitly say that the same holds for internships, but I’m sure it does. If you do require more structure, you can find some of their internships posted on Startuply. There’s an Unpaid Online Marketing position posted as well as two positions that may or may not be internships (they say internships, but they kind of look like full-time jobs) – Flex / AS3 Developer and Facebook Connect / Social-Web Developer. It really doesn’t matter though, just reach out to them and tell them how you can help them. Don’t constrain yourself by applying for a specific position.
